The immune system interacts directly with the nervous system affecting overall health, but obstructions with the signaling pathways between the nervous and the immune system impact the ability to heal adequately. Most people think that chiropractic has to do with back or neck pain, and most can’t argue that they do feel much better after they go to the chiropractor. However, the main goal and purpose of regular chiropractic care is to maintain a healthy nervous system, free of interference and functioning at an optimal level. When a nerve is interfered with due to a subluxation, it causes irritation to the nerve and sends the body into a state of sympathetic dominance, known as the Stress Response. During this stress response there are a number of physiological events that take place that are immunosuppressive, like the production of hormones like epinephrine, norepinephrine, and cortisol. Without the use of surgery or medication, chiropractic care removes these barriers so that the body can properly repair itself at a genetic level and stimulate the immune system fully.
